Lighthouse Foundation Honors Community Members With Manning Shining Light Awards

Community members and honorees congregated at the Matrix Center in Manning for the Lighthouse Foundation's Sapphire Ball Black Tie Affair on Friday night. The foundation's board of trustees honored five recipients who have taken leadership roles and helped with vital contributions in rural communities throughout the state and who encourage others to follow their footsteps.
Terence Tindal, the founder of the organization, presented the awards for each honoree. Julia Nelson, mayor of Manning, received the leadership award; Detrice Brown, a former teacher in the now former Clarendon School District 1 who currently works as curriculum coordinator in Jasper County School District, received the educator award; Kathleen L. Gibson received the citizenship award; Sharon Mellette, CEO of the I Am That Girl organization, received the community organization award; and JazLynn Bowman received the Shining Light Youth Leadership award. Anita Benbow also received an award of honor for her contributions in organizing Friday's event.
The Lighthouse Foundation is a non-profit organization that consists of community leaders and advocates for children with special needs. The foundation's goal is to improve the quality of life of for the children as well as their caregivers.

The Light Foundation’s Shining Light Awards honors individuals and groups who are making vital contributions in rural communities throughout South Carolina. Our purpose is to give broad exposure to individuals and groups who are making difficult decisions to enhance excellence and encourage others to follow in their footsteps.
The Shining Light Awards recognize and profile individuals who, in one way or another, have taken a leadership role in encouraging people and communities to work jointly to improve rural communities. Anyone may nominate an individual for a Shining Light Award. An individual may only be nominated for one of the five Shining Light Awards.
