While other teachers are enjoying a much-needed summer vacation one Morris College Professor will be sharpening his performance skills sharing music to other cultures abroad.

For a week Dr. Herbert Johnson and a special 300-member-voice choir will be performing in London England for 10 days. Roughly three members are from Sumter, SC including Herbert Johnson of Grant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, and Francis Thomas of Trinity United Methodist Church.
This special performance includes a selection of four spirituals written by African American Composers. Dr. Herbert Johnson is a soloist for a few selections.

Dr. Johnson shared his thoughts on the upcoming performance and the journey to get there.

Have you ever previously performed overseas? And what makes this trip different?

I traveled to and performed in Syros and Athens, Greece about three summers ago doing a similar travel abroad performance opportunity. The only difference is the location and the repertoire or music we will be performing.

What does this performance mean to you?

I believe each time we travel internationally it opens up another world of understanding and information to us the more knowledgeable and experienced we become allows us to better communicate, share, and instruct others

Whats next in your music career, besides being an awesome professor?

Well believe it or not I will actually be presented an honorary doctorate this weekend before I leave for London, and next year I will travel to Hawaii to perform.
