Benedict Surges To Claim 5th Straight SIAC Women's Track & Field Championship

The Benedict College women's track & field team surged on the final day of competition to win their fifth consecutive SIAC Championship on Saturday at Morehouse College's Edwin Moses Track.
Benedict scored 137 points on Saturday to finish with 190 total points. Clark Atlanta finished in second with 113 points. Savannah State finished in third with 102 points.
Benedict Head Coach Danny Brooks was named the women's track & field Coach of the Year.
Benedict started the day winning the 4x100-meter relay race. The team of Santiona Freeman, Kassie Jordan, Shantel Williams and Kanesha Moses won with a time of 47.03.
Benedict took first and second in the 100-meter hurdles. Freeman won with a time of 14.36, while Kaciann Cowan was second with a time of 14.69.
Moses won the 400-meter run with a time of 55.02. Torriann Noad was fourth with a time of 56.10. Moses also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.91.
Shantel Williams won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12:28, and was third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.10.
In the women's 1,500-meter run, Megan Thompson finished second with a time of 5:03.09, while Floma Okumu was fourth (5:17.87), and Purity Kibet was sixth (5:26.97). Thompson also finished seventh in the 800-meter run.
Kibet was second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:48.53. Okumu was fourth.
Thompson finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.12. Sinia Massillon was fourth and Freeman was seventh.
The Lady Tigers wrapped up by winning the day's final event, the 4x400-meter relay race. Benedict's team of Jordan, Noad, Thompson and Moses won with a time of 3:49.17 to beat second-place Clark Atlanta by more than three seconds.
Jordan also finished in fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.55 meters (5 feet, 1 inch).
