SC Community Resiliency Hubs Established

April 14, 2023

On Monday April 10, 2023, New Alpha Community Development Corporation convened members of the SC Environmental Justice Network and partner organizations to announce the SC Resiliency Hubs Initiative. In 2022, New Alpha Community Development Corporation in partnership with Kingdom Living Temple Church, The Whitney M. Slater Foundation, The Widow and Widowers of Veterans and other community nonprofits and churches address the issue of increasing climate change impacts.

New Alpha Community Development Corporation developed a solar powered Renewable Energy Rapid Response Disaster Relief Kit that was housed in Kingdom Living Temple. This provides a safe space that can serve as a warming or cooling center, provide solar lighting, access to charging stations for cell phones and other devices, monitoring, food preparation, energy and many other needed services. Interested parties can watch the rapid response video online at https://vimeo.com/650918414/bb4d4d055e.

The CDC in partnership with the SC EJ Network will be strategically and geographically located in these resiliency hubs in the following cities: Aiken, SC; Hopkins, SC; N. Charleston, Georgetown, Florence, Laurens, Greenville, McColl, and Dillon. These disaster relief kits are also mobile so that the kits can be set up in any part of the state that has been impacted by a weather related disaster. On Monday, April 10, 2023 at 2pm, there will be a press conference with representatives from the aforementioned cities and organizations. The press conference will be held at Kingdom Living Temple, 705 S. Irby Street, Florence SC 29501.

These community solutions have also been established in Queens, NY; Dubin Heights, NC; Louisville, KY; and Jackson, MS. We look forward to your media outlets participation in this historic conference.
