South Carolina Conference Focuses on Scaling Community-led Climate Solutions

October 28, 2022

Florence, SC – As the Biden administration executes on the federal government’s largest-ever financial commitment to climate and environmental justice, the Rev. Leo Woodberry and other prominent environmental justice leaders will gather at the annual Creating a Climate for Change conference to showcase community-led climate solutions that are practical, scalable, and ready for investment.
The event will feature keynote speeches from Biden administration officials Shalanda Baker (virtual) and Dr. Jalonne White-Newsome, as well as federal climate policy experts Dr. Mustafa Santiago Ali of the National Wildlife Federation and Keya Chatterjee (virtual) of USCAN.

“We’re living in a new reality, where low-income communities are working harder than ever to protect themselves from the climate crisis and the federal government is providing much-needed support. This conference reflects the importance of communities and government working closely together to ensure funding flows to real climate justice solutions,” said the Rev. Leo Woodberry, who named this year’s conference A New Reality: Community Solutions.
Rev. Woodberry and his colleagues will highlight projects including:

SOURCE hydropanel installations at Rev. Woodberry’s church and water-insecure communities across the South; hydropanels create pure drinking water from sunlight and air

An environmental justice training center in Britton’s Neck, SC — a low- to moderate-income Black community with a rich history tied to the Revolutionary War

Climate disaster relief kits equipped with dozens of items, from boats and solar-powered electric chargers to electric bikes, tents, and solar-powered grills

A tribal education cultural center that’s focused on promoting a regenerative economy and ecotourism

Eisengard AI’s project with Rev. Woodberry to measure energy burdens and environmental injustice impacts in South Carolina
