Civil Rights Groups Stand To Support Judge Brown Jackson

**MoveOn Executive Director Rahna Epting Statement On Reported Historic Supreme Court Nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson**
“President Biden’s reported nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson for the Supreme Court is a historic moment for our country and the ongoing fight to ensure that justice is equal under the law. We have gone more than 240 years without a Black woman on the Supreme Court, and it’s long past time to see an excellent nominee who will bring that perspective.
“Ketanji Brown Jackson is an eminently qualified jurist with a remarkable record spanning Harvard Law School, a Supreme Court clerkship, and serving as a judge on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. She is the first nominee since Thurgood Marshall to have experience as a defense lawyer.
“We look forward to a swift confirmation, with which the GOP should have no qualms given Senator McConnell’s track record of expediting Supreme Court nominees.
“Today’s landmark announcement will undoubtedly kick off an ugly cesspool of racist and sexist attacks from the right. MoveOn members across the country will have Judge Jackson’s back and hold any political leaders responsible for cowardly smears accountable in November.”
“While it will require more than one nominee to rebalance the Supreme Court, which has been hijacked by right-wing power grabs, MoveOn members are ready to see the confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson, to secure this critical and historic moment, and to push back against attacks and disinformation throughout this process.”
**NAACP Urges Senate Judiciary Committee To Strongly Support Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson**
The NAACP sent a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee, strongly urging support for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. After a review of her civil rights record and rulings, the NAACP noted that "Judge Jackson is an extraordinarily well-qualified candidate with an exceptionally diverse background. Her presence on the Court will help advance our common goal of providing equal justice to all."
"This is a history-making appointment for America. Based on her record, Judge Jackson will bring to the Court a unique and powerful voice that will forever change this institution. The NAACP proudly and enthusiastically endorses her nomination, We will engage and deploy our leaders and members in all fifty states to ensure the most favorable vote possible for this stellar nominee." Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO
"Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson will bring her background, her perspective and her lived experiences as a Black woman to the Court. She will be the first former public defender ever to serve on the Court. This is an incredibly valuable perspective given the structural racism and discrimination that underlie every stage of the criminal legal system. She is the ideal candidate for this moment and this Court." Janette McCarthy Wallace, NAACP General Counsel
"In the 232-year history of the Supreme Court, this is a monumental first. The NAACP's efforts to monitor appointments to the Court date back almost one hundred years. Just as we embraced Thurgood Marshall's appointment to the Court in 1967 with celebration and pride, we are thrilled by this powerful opportunity to expand representation on the Court and appoint a justice like Judge Jackson who is committed to fundamental fairness and equal justice. " Leon W. Russell, NAACP Board of Directors.
